Editor’s Note – Clearly the most important story of the week was Trump’s inauguration. However, the pomp and circumstances were overshadowed by the admonitions to Trump at the prayer service by Rev. Mariann Budde. Trump’s executive orders eliminating DEI in the federal government was the top story of his first few days, including encouraging the private sector to follow his lead. The untruths about DEI, and the reasons for dismantling this initiative, are stunningly reminiscent of past attempts in our history to establish white supremacy. The idea of “civic ignorance” is one explanation of why the American public will not resist, at least in the short term, these threats to our democracy. Misinformation and dis-information are the culprits. However, additionally, in my view, reading the news from creditable sources, as opposed to listening and scrolling through videos, is a far better way to stay informed about current events.
