After Barack Obama and Donald Trump met on Thursday in the Oval Office—this was the first time they’d ever formally met, which makes sense, I guess, but registers as a bit of a shock—the White House press pool was granted a few minutes of access to the President and his depressing successor. Both addressed the reporters briefly. The meeting had been “excellent” and “wide-ranging,” Obama said, and had encompassed the organization of a White House and several points of foreign and domestic policy. “I have great respect” for the President, Trump said, although, of course, he has many times over proved otherwise. When they were done, they very stiffly shook hands.
