Editor’s Note: Character is often defined by inner traits like honesty, integrity, compassion, and courage, which guide a person’s decisions and actions. Many of Trump’s policies and executive orders are informed by his lack of character. General McChrystal in his book ” On Character – Choices That Define Life,” observed: When society rewards success devoid of integrity, it undermines the foundational importance of character. Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, former president of Morehouse College, a towering figure in American education and civil rights, profoundly understood that character is the foundation upon which true leadership and social progress are built. Moreover, Mays saw character as inseparable from community and service. He taught that true character manifests when individuals act not solely for personal gain but for the common good. As president of Morehouse College for nearly three decades, he molded generations of African American leaders who carried forward his principles of social justice and ethical leadership. He insisted that education must develop the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—rooted in strong character.
