Editor’s Note: On Bullshit is a 1986 essay and 2005 book by the American philosopher Harry G. Frankfurt which presents a theory of bullshit that defines the concept and analyzes the applications of bullshit in the context of communication (Wikipedia).  According to Frankfurt, a liar knows the truth and tries to conceal it, while a bullshitter doesn’t care whether what they’re saying is true or false—they’re focused on effect, not accuracy. Frankfurt would likely classify Trump as a bullshit artist because the effect he hopes to accomplish is : narrative control, emotional resonance, image reinforcement and power retention. Trump lies at times, but his dominant mode is bullshit—as Frankfurt defines it. That’s what makes his communication so powerful to followers and so dangerous to democratic discourse. Now, lets turn our attention to the Bill that is on Trump’s desk. Americans oppose this Bill 2 to 1, and it will cause great harm to many of our fellow citizens. The Democrat’s strategy, going forward, is to expose the truth about the Bill. Trump, on the other hand, will be indifferent to the truth, and try to convince the American people what is true is false through deception and “bullshit.”
